Guwahati is the capital of Assam. All states in the North East are connected to the rest of the country through Guwahati and is the commercial centre of North East with all major companies having regional offices in the city. Guwahati is biggest centre of education in North East. I.I.T., University of Guwahati, Guwahati Medical College, Assam Engineering College, Cotton College, College of Veterinary Science, etc. are important centres of learning.

Guwahati is situated on the south bank of river Brahmaputra with beautiful green hills surrounding it.

Shaktipeeth Kamakhya attracts devotees from all over India. Large number of devotees converge on this holy place during Ambubashi and Manasha Puja. Sukreswar, Navagraha, Umananda, Poorva Tirupathi are other important temples. The hermitage of Rishi Basistha is located in the southern part of Guwahati.
